What do the words in a remote repair booking mean?

Every term we use, defined once.

The vocabulary of an imported Chinese EV, from the cable to the cloud. Each entry says what the thing is and why it matters for a car that left China.

Chinese-version (China-spec) car

A Chinese-version car is a vehicle built for sale in mainland China, with Chinese-market software, telematics, charging connector and settings. It differs from the export version of the same model that the manufacturer sells abroad.

Why it matters Most of what we fix comes from the software being tied to China: OTA updates, apps, warning lamps for services that do not exist abroad.

Parallel import (grey import)

A parallel import is a car bought in one market and shipped to another outside the manufacturer’s official distribution. It is legal in most countries but carries no factory warranty or dealer support in the destination market.

Why it matters Parallel-import Chinese EVs are the cars whose owners book us: no dealer will touch them, and the software still thinks it is in China.

ENET cable

An ENET cable is an OBD-II to RJ45 Ethernet adapter that connects a car’s diagnostic Ethernet port to a computer. It is a passive lead with no electronics inside.

Why it matters It is one of the two things you need for a remote session. Generic cables from about $20 work for most brands; Avatr needs a brand-specific lead.

DoIP (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol)

DoIP is the ISO 13400 standard for carrying vehicle diagnostic messages over Ethernet and TCP/IP instead of a CAN bus. Modern Chinese EVs use it for programming and coding because it is fast enough to flash large software packages.

Why it matters Because DoIP is already TCP/IP, the engineer’s laptop can reach your car through an encrypted internet tunnel as if it were plugged in locally.

OBD-II port

The OBD-II port is the standard 16-pin diagnostic connector found under the dashboard of every modern car. On Chinese EVs it carries both CAN and Ethernet (DoIP) pins.

Why it matters This is where the ENET cable plugs in. No panels are removed and nothing is modified.

OTA update

An OTA (over-the-air) update is new vehicle software delivered wirelessly from the manufacturer’s cloud to the car. The car requests a package matched to its VIN, region and current version.

Why it matters The manufacturer’s cloud only serves VINs registered in China, so an imported car stops updating. An engineer can flash the same package over the ENET cable instead.

VIN registration (region binding)

VIN registration is the record in the manufacturer’s backend that ties a vehicle identification number to a market, an owner account and a software line. Cloud services check it before serving updates, maps or app logins.

Why it matters Once a car is exported its VIN no longer matches the region the backend expects, which is the root cause of most Chinese-import software problems.

T-Box (telematics box)

The T-Box is the car’s telematics control unit: a modem, SIM and GPS module that connects the vehicle to the manufacturer’s cloud for remote functions, OTA delivery and connected services.

Why it matters Abroad, the Chinese SIM cannot reach its carrier, the T-Box logs a lost-communication fault and a warning lamp stays on until the module is coded out.

DTC (diagnostic trouble code)

A DTC is a standardised fault code stored by a vehicle controller when it detects a problem, such as U0198 for lost communication with the telematics module or P0A0D for a high-voltage system interlock.

Why it matters Reading DTCs is the first step of every session. Clearing them is not a fix; the cause has to be removed or coded out.

ECU coding (variant coding)

ECU coding is writing configuration data into an electronic control unit so it knows the vehicle it is fitted to: VIN, trim, options, market and the presence of other modules. Variant coding is the subset that describes the equipment level.

Why it matters A replacement module arrives blank or coded for another car and is rejected until it is coded with the OEM tool, which only a dealer or an OEM engineer has.

Central gateway

The central gateway is the controller that routes messages between the car’s networks and holds the list of modules the vehicle is supposed to have. Diagnostic tools talk to every other module through it.

Why it matters Coding a China-only module out of the gateway configuration is how a permanent warning lamp is cleared without masking real faults.

Crash lock (high-voltage lockout)

A crash lock is the safety state an EV enters after an airbag deployment: the airbag controller stores a crash record and the battery management system opens the high-voltage contactors so the traction battery is disconnected.

Why it matters After the body repair the car still refuses to drive until the crash record is cleared and high voltage re-enabled with the OEM tool, which we do remotely after checks.

BMS (battery management system)

The BMS is the controller that monitors and protects the traction battery: cell voltages, temperatures, insulation, state of charge and the contactors that connect the pack to the car.

Why it matters It holds the high-voltage lockout after a crash and reports the isolation and cell data the engineer checks before re-enabling the pack.

ADAS calibration

ADAS calibration is the procedure that teaches the driver-assistance camera and radar their exact position on the car, using a target board (static) or a road drive (dynamic). It is required after a windscreen, bumper or sensor replacement.

Why it matters The routine runs from the OEM tool. Your workshop positions the target; the engineer starts and verifies the calibration remotely.

ADB (Android Debug Bridge)

ADB is the command-line tool for talking to an Android device over USB or Wi-Fi, including installing apps (APK files). On a car it applies to the Android-based head unit.

Why it matters Chinese-market head units ship with ADB disabled. Once an engineer enables it, the owner can install Google Maps, Waze or Spotify.

OEM diagnostic software

OEM diagnostic software is the manufacturer’s own program for reading, coding and programming its cars, licensed to dealers and authorised engineers and connected to the manufacturer’s cloud for VIN-matched data and security authorisation.

Why it matters Generic scan tools can read codes but cannot flash software or program keys on Chinese EVs. Our engineers use the OEM tool; you rent the engineer, not the software.
